2 Pieter's projects winner of Lieve de Key medal 2023

The winner of both the jury prize and the audience prize of the Lieven de Key Penning 2023 was announced on Tuesday evening, November 21. This took place during a festive evening in De Koepel, the building that received both the Medal and the Audience Award last year.The jury prize went to De Scheepmaker and the audience prize to the Rudolf Steiner College.

Lieven de Key medal
This year this prize has been awarded for the eleventh consecutive time. The award is named after the Flemish architect Lieven de Key (approx. 1557/1560 – 1627), the first city architect of Haarlem. The medal is awarded annually by the municipality of Haarlem to a person or organization that has made a contribution in the field of historic preservation, architecture or urban planning.

De Scheepmaker
The Scheepmakerskwartier is located between the Molen de Adriaan, the Spaarne and the Harmenjansweg in Haarlem. The eight-storey residential building mediates between the small-scale buildings along the Binnen Spaarne and the larger size of the railway bridge, the Oudeweg and the northern (former) industrial landscape. Because of this double position, the design is composed of multiple volumes on a common plinth. The homes on the street and quay enclose a three-level parking garage.

Rudolf Steiner College
The Rudolf Steiner School and the Rudolf Steiner College are located in Schakwijk in Haarlem. The School needed new housing, the College needed expansion. The two existing school buildings from 1907, which are opposite each other on the longitudinal side, with a vacant lot in between, have been restored to their former glory. Characteristic of both buildings are the high ceilings, spacious classrooms and lots of light.

Both buildings are connected by an intermediate section; the 'connector'. This makes it possible for both schools to share a large hall.
