3 October 2024

Two Pieters projects have been nominated for the 2024 Concrete Award.

The Herta Mohr building in Leiden has been nominated in the Existing Building category
The Netherlands American Cemetery Visitor Center in Margraten in the Utility Building category
Concrete Award
This prestigious award has been presented every 2 years since 1979 to leading projects in the concrete construction sector to increase knowledge and expertise in the entire Dutch concrete sector. These projects are an example of, among other things, intelligent, responsible, future-oriented, valuable and inspiring applications of the material concrete.

Herta Mohr building, Leiden
The Herta Mohr building (formerly: Cluster Zuid) is part of the Leiden University Library. The project involves the renovation of 7 existing buildings into one modern building. Cluster Zuid was designed in the late 1970s by architect Joop van Stigt for the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University. During the renovation and expansion, the surface area was increased from 7,850 to 11,400 square meters. The building now offers more than 700 places for education and self-study, two lecture halls, work and meeting rooms, common areas and two libraries.

Netherlands American Cemetery Visitor Center, Margraten
The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) has opened its 10th visitors center at the American Cemetery in Margraten, the Netherlands. Designed by  KAAN Architects, the American Cemetery Visitor Center Margraten houses an exhibition that highlights the special bond between the Netherlands and the United States. The concrete process required an innovative approach in which layers were carefully poured and compacted without mixing, resulting in a natural layered effect. Each new layer could only be applied approximately 4 hours after the underlying layer was poured. The facade was constructed in a single continuous pour, a process that took approximately three days. After curing, the facade was raised in a groundbreaking way using hydraulic jacks, a technical feat that underscores the advanced construction technique of the project.

Award ceremony
The winners of the Concrete Award will be announced at the Concrete Event on November 21, 2024 at the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam.
