ROOT, Eindhoven - school building becomes residential building

10 October 2023

ROOT will soon rise where a former school building once stood; a residential building with 55 sustainable homes. The shell is in place and the wooden construction on the inside has currently been placed (the outside will follow in a month).

Construction
The facades of all apartments and general areas are designed as insulated timber frame elements with wooden cladding. The galleries and balconies are prefab plates that rest on the wooden structure.

Sustainability
The sustainability performance of the homes is high. The energy requirement (BENG-1) is already more than 10% below the new legal requirements for 2021. The materials used are renewable and therefore come from biological sources. In addition, the integration of nature and biodiversity is carefully examined. Nesting sites and boxes form an integral part of the design, taking into account the preferred positions of breeding opportunities for various animal species. The roof is finished with sedum moss, better known as a 'green roof' and is also used to collect rainwater.
