Leiden University has built the Gorlaeus Building at the Leiden Bio Science Park;a new and sustainable building with research and education facilities for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The new sustainable building stimulates academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
The new building, designed by INBO and JHK Architects, where Pieters Bouwtechniek designed and developed the construction, will be realized in three phases. The first phase of the new building was opened in 2016 and covers 45,000 m². Phase 2A, with an area of 30,000 m², was completed in the period from 2018 to 2023. The building is BREEAM certified with the ambition of BREEAM Excellent.
Phase 2A consists of laboratories (some of which are low-vibration), office / workspace, self-study areas and teaching areas (lecture and seminar). The communal facilities have also been realized in phase 2A: a library, central main entrance and catering facilities. There are also two large atriums. At the main entrance there is a Voronoi facade, based on the mathematical Voronoi diagram (by mathematician Georgy Voronoi), symbol for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
