16 November 2023

Juf Nienke in Amsterdam  is the winner of the National Timber Construction Prize 2023 in the serial timber construction category. The architectural qualities in particular made the difference, according to the jury.According to the jury, the building already makes an 'architectural gesture even before the materialization is clear'.

Miss Nienke
Miss Nienke in Amsterdam consists of 61 fully wooden rental homes, designed to provide a modern and sustainable living environment for residents from education, police and healthcare. This target group of residents was chosen because the lack of suitable living space causes a major shortage of personnel in certain professional groups in Amsterdam.Miss Nienke is composed of five layers of stacked wooden modules of 15m high on a concrete table construction.

The 61 wooden rental homes are divided into mid-rental homes for teachers and homes for key professions in Amsterdam, as well as private sector rental homes for families. The building is modular, meaning it can easily be adapted to changing needs. There is also an open meeting street and a communal courtyard where residents can come together.

The building has a sturdy and urban appearance, with a 15-meter-high wooden main supporting structure on top of a concrete table structure. The transparent plinth on the ground floor offers space for commercial activities, shared workplaces, homework assistance and workshops.

Miss Nienke's design is the result of close collaboration between RAU, SeARCH and Pieters Bouwtechniek as the structural designer.
