Herta Mohr (voorheen: Cluster Zuid), Leiden gereed
The construction of the Herta Mohr building (formerly: Cluster Zuid) in Leiden is complete. The official opening is on October 8, but the building is already largely in use.
The Herta Mohr building is part of Leiden University Library. The project involves the renovation of 7 existing buildings into one modern building.
Cluster Zuid
Cluster Zuid was designed in the late 1970s by architect Joop van Stigt for the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University.
Renovation and expansion
During the renovation and expansion, the surface area was increased from 7,850 to 11,400 square meters. The building now offers space for more than 700 places for education and self-study, two lecture halls, work and meeting rooms, common areas and two libraries.
New concrete floors were added on the 1st and 2nd floors to connect the existing buildings to form one whole around the new atrium. For the new installations, a new installation space has been created on the 3rd floor with channel plates and a light steel roof construction. For the loads from the new construction components, new steel screw injection piles have been added at a number of positions in the basement where the existing piles did not have sufficient capacity.
Project partners
The architect is De Zwarte Hond, the client is Real Estate Company Leiden University. Kuijpers is the installer, Constructif the contractor and Nelissen Ingenieursbureau the installation consultant. Pieters Bouwtechniek is involved in this project as the main structural engineer and is responsible for the structural design consisting of various concrete structures and the eye-catching steel structure of the new atrium.
