Cheese warehouse wins Staalprijs 2018

Cheese warehouse in Gouda yesterday won the Staalprijs 2018 in the category Housing construction. De Staalprijs is the biennial construction price for projects in steel. The jury can nominate projects in five categories. The results were announced during the National Steel Construction Day 2018.

The Cheese Warehouse 'De Producent' in the cheese town of Gouda is a national monument and underwent a spectacular transformation into a residential building with lofts. The building has 50 apartments of 60-120 m2, with a large atrium in the middle. The design takes into account the special role it has in Gouda's cheese history. Thanks to innovative reuse of as many elements as possible from the old warehouse, such as the original cheese shelves, the history of 100 years of cheese making can still be felt in the building.

The biggest changes of the transformation to loft dwelling building only become visible when you enter the building. By removing pieces of floor and facade on both sides of the original ventilation alley between the two warehouses, and then covering the alley, a generous atrium was created. From here, four layers of loft apartments are unlocked.

Mei architects and planners is the architect of this original design and has been closely involved in the implementation.

The All Weather Terminal 4 was also nominated in the Industrial construction category. The International Student House was nominated within the Housing Construction category.

Student café
A complete program for students had been arranged by the organization. Building with Steel organized, by means of Tata Steel, for several groups of students an excursion to the new sea lock within the existing lock complex at IJmuiden. There were several workshops and excursions. In addition, the central meeting point for students was the Student Café. Several companies were present for any questions or a conversation. Pieters was also represented during the student café.
