2 Pieters projects in pre-selection for Timber Construction Award 2024
The Pieters projects Republica in Amsterdam and the Orchard House in Heemstede are in the pre-selection of the National Timber Construction Award, within the categories commercial timber construction and private timber construction. The jury selects the nominees from this pre-selection and then the winners after another jury round. The public selects its own favourite from the entire pre-selection and thus determines the Public Award.
The National Timber Construction Award
The National Timber Construction Award aims to stimulate building with wood in the Netherlands. It is an initiative of Het Houtblad, an independent trade journal for the design and construction of wooden buildings.
There are 5 awards to be won:
- Category Commercial timber construction
- Category Private timber construction
- Category Serial timber construction
- Overall winner National Timber Construction Award
- National Timber Construction Audience Award
Republica, Amsterdam
The sustainable residential and working area Republica, designed by Marc Koehler Architects and Loer architects, plays an important role in the redevelopment of a former industrial estate between Papaverweg and Bosrankstraat in Buiksloterham, Amsterdam Noord.
Building 4, the short-stay apartment building of this complex has 126 apartments, a restaurant, fitness and swimming pool and public roof terrace. The modular wooden facade is a crucial element in the sustainable architecture of the project. The facade, constructed from Plato Fraké planks, pre-greyed with Olympic Stain and mounted on prefabricated timber frame facade filling elements, offers a varied and aesthetically attractive facade appearance with changing elements. Thanks to the open and modular character of the facades, adjustments can be made in the future.
The Orchard House, Heemstede
The Orchard House, designed by Namelok and Earthbound Architecture, De Houtdag 2024 , is located on the Berkenrode Estate in Heemstede. A solid oak construction serves as a framework for the entire house. The roof construction has had a major influence on both the exterior and the interior: what starts as a traditional mansard roof that refers to the surrounding building shapes, unfolds towards the rear in an asymmetrical pavilion-like roof. The sloping edge beams and the repetition of rafters, each at a different angle, create a dynamic, curved roof. The facade parts between the wooden construction are made of lime hemp. In addition to the wooden construction, the wooden facade cladding, frames, gutter supports, roof boarding, floors and cabinets are also made of wood. The house has a palette of no fewer than five different types of wood: oak, yellow cedar, padouk, afrormosia and mahogany.
The National Timber Construction Awards will be presented during Timber Day 2024 on November 12, 2024.
