Gorlaeus Building of Leiden University opened
The Gorlaeus Building on the Leiden Bio Science Park was recently officially opened and put into use. The building of Leiden University houses research and education facilities for the Faculty of Science, and stimulates academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
The new sustainable building, designed by INBO and HK Architecten, with Pieters Bouwtechniek designing and developing the construction, was completed in three phases.
The first phase of the new building was put into use in 2016 and covers 45,000 m².
Phase 2A, with a surface area of 30,000 m², was completed in the period from 2018 to 2023. The building will be BREEAM certified with the ambition of BREEAM Excellent. Pieters is also responsible for the BIM coordination.
Phase 2B consists of low-vibration laboratories (cryogenic, optical, chemical) with VC-E and VC-D classification with office/work spaces and has a size of 7,694 m².
The client requested a future-proof building in which the laboratories of the C wing are adaptable (changeable), in order to convert laboratories into offices or teaching spaces in the future. The building is therefore structurally future-proof.
