Construction agreement House of the City, Dordrecht signed

The House of City and Region Dordrecht will be built by contractor J.P. van Eesteren from Gouda and installation company Van Dorp from Capelle aan den IJssel. They came out as winners in the European tender. On 17 May, alderman Maarten Burggraaf signed the contract with these companies. The architectural design comes from Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Pieters Bouwtechniek is the construction consultant.

The House of City and Region Dordrecht is the new home of the municipality of Dordrecht, Social Services Drechtsteden, the City Library and the VVV. It will be a home for every inhabitant of Dordrecht. After opening, residents can come here for many things, such as language lessons, a place to study or an appointment with the social services.

It was important in the tender that the contractors, in addition to a price, also came up with a clear vision of the construction method, the implementation period and the logistics on and around the construction site.

“We set high standards for the construction of the House of City and Region, because it indicates what we have in mind with Dordrecht,” explains alderman Burggraaf. “We really want to show here what our quality ambitions are for the city and that we also realize them.”

Sustainable building
The house was designed by the Danish architectural firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. This office won the 2020 architectural competition. It has been designed very sustainably with energy-efficient installations, excellent insulation and solar panels on roofs and facades. The construction of the building consists largely of wooden beams and columns. The building has a green roof garden and retains the water for a while during heavy rain.

Start construction after summer
The demolition of the old buildings on the Spuiboulevard is expected to be completed before the summer. After the construction holiday, the new building of the House of City and Region will start. With this, the municipality is taking the first step in the transformation of the Spuiboulevard into a lively green urban district for living and working on the edge of the historic city center of Dordrecht. The house is expected to open its doors in mid-2025.
