Museum Arnhem winner of the National Steel Prize 2022

4 October 2022

Museum Arnhem is the winner of the National Steel Prize 2022 in the Non-Residential Building category. The National Steel Award is the biennial construction award for steel projects.

From the jury report: "On the moraine, the extension of Museum Arnhem balances next to the proud dome of the original men's club from the 19th century. Not only does the museum extension frame an interesting outdoor room, and naturally takes its place in the environment, but also The new wing with its cantilever adds a represectively symbolic value to the museum and to the whole. The final image looks so light that you would almost forget that there is a constructive play of forces. The serving role of steel, deployed invisibly, is seldom so manifest.”

Museum Arnhem
Museum Arnhem  has undergone a thorough renovation. The most striking change is the monumental dome with an open character that is the meeting place of the museum. Together with the museum shop and the museum café, this public space is also the starting point for a logical hall circuit. The garden is connected to the museum via the large outside staircase.

A new feature is that the depot for the collection of Museum Arnhem and the archeology of the municipality of Arnhem now has a place under the new overhang wing. What makes the new wing unique is that it protrudes further on both sides. As a result, the new wing is clearly visible from both Utrechtseweg and Onderlangs.

Museum Arnhem was built partly floating above a moraine - a ridge raised by an ice tongue. To realize this, a spectacular construction has been devised: an extension mechanism by means of jacks.

Only thanks to the great collaboration with all partners we have been able to successfully realize this special project.
