Progress of the De Nieuwe Defense project, Utrecht

A completely new residential area will be built on the Merwede Canal: De Nieuwe Defensie. This is the redevelopment of the former Defense Area in Utrecht, a 10-minute walk from the city center of Utrecht. There will be 600 homes spread over 5 residential blocks. There will be a large number of different housing types, ground-level homes, apartments and 2 apartment towers, with a parking garage under some of the blocks. The offer consists of both purchase and rental. The clients for the new building are BPD and Mitros.

The first phase consists of blocks 1 and 2 - 80 social rental homes for Mitros and 211 owner-occupied homes. This first supply of owner-occupied homes consists of predominantly spacious family homes, large apartments and penthouses. In block 2, a large parking garage is also being built. These homes can be occupied at the end of 2022 and the end of 2023. Phase 2 and 3 will be realized afterwards.

Four architects are working on the project, with each architect designing and developing one or more blocks.

At the moment, the structural work of block 1A has been completed and the construction of blocks 2A and 2B is fully underway. In the summer, the foundation of block 1B will be started.

Pieters has been involved in the plan from the start (2018) of the redevelopment and will provide constructive advice for Block 3, Block 5 and Toren 02 in addition to the blocks mentioned above.
