From Pieters ILS 1.0 to Pieters ILS 2.1

2 September 2019

The Pieters ILS is a basis with which you can connect to other Information Delivery Specifications. It provides a structured model that can be used by every party involved. There is now a version 2.1.

It is no longer a question whether BIM is applied, but it is more a question of how BIM is applied within a project. BIM is not only about the Building Information Model, but especially about Building Information Management. With the "P.iLS", the Pieters Information Delivery Specification, Pieters tries to give structural information about elements a fixed place so that they can be found quickly. Validated constructive information of elements is released in phases to prevent uncertainty about its correctness.

The emergence of the Pieters ILS begins with the publication of the "BIM Basic ILS", the BIM basic Information Delivery Specification. This BIM Basic ILS is written by a group of contractors to better structure information management in the models. Finally, a line was drawn with the BIM Basic ILS and a number of clear agreements were made with which a building model must at least comply. Nationally, the BIM Basis ILS is a much-requested basis for the provision of information and the structuring of models.

On a number of points, the BIM Basic ILS does not fit well with the constructive principles that we, as Pieters, incorporate into our models. The inclusion of non-structural properties detracts from the quality of the structural model. The constructive principles form the basis of our work and responsibilities. The Pieters Information Delivery Specification "P.iLS" is the constructive implementation of the "BIM Basis ILS" and serves as the basis for all Pieters models.

Models are increasingly being used as the information carrier within the process. Third-party searches in the model for information and drawings are less and less often seen as "leading." The IFC model is the end product to be supplied by Pieters. This IFC model can be seen as the "PDF" from the native Revit model and is not directly adaptable in the field of geometry and element information.

We have discussed the P.iLS 1.0 with various small and large clients and also asked for feedback from all Pieters employees. The content of the P.iLS 2.1 has changed on 1 point compared to version 1.0. At the request of many, we have made a further breakdown with regard to NL-SfB coding. Walls and floors will be split into resp. Chapters 22 and 23. Columns and beams remain part of Chapter 28.

Another purpose of the new version is to provide additional information about the ambiguities and to explain the responsibilities that Pieters has to provide a constructively correct model. We already use the P.iLS 2.1 in the quotation, so that we can create the right expectations in advance, both with the client and with the project team.

In addition to the P.iLS 2.1, the website also contains additional explanations of the P.iLS and the non-cutting of elements.
